š I could not be more DELIGHTED for my Aunty Jill if I tried! š
HUGE shout out to Jill Paterson who was recognised with an OAM on the Queenās Birthday
Her Order of Australia Medal is in acknowledgement of her contribution to her community in Meningie, SA over the past 40 years, as a leader, committee member and volunteer.
In her spare time she also provided administrative support to Nyangatjatjara College at Yulara, near Uluru.
Of the experience she says,
“you are never too old to step out of your comfort zone and do something different. I went to that College in Central Australia and worked in their office, volunteering to do anything for periods of 4 to 8 weeks over 8 years … Bill (husband) commented that I was the oldest FIFO worker he knew! I turned 75 that year.”
The monetary value of unpaid care work in Australia has been estimated to be $650.1 BIL and is predominantly undertaken by women, yet is frequently undervalued and unrecognised.
Thanks to Jill for drawing attention to this important issue and for being an amazing role model to so many young women.
My Uncle Bill Paterson was also a recipient (Bill Paterson OAM)
Congratulations to both AJ & UB!
And keep stepping out of your comfort zone everyone!
